Mazda Goes Back to the Basics for 2014 MX-5 Miata

Those who have been faithful Mazda enthusiasts since the late 80's will remember the fun, sporty style present in the first-ever 1989 MX-5 Miata. While proceeding generations of the convertible have found tremendous success, for the 2014 model year, Mazda will turn back in time and whip up some of that original Miata magic.

Hirotaka Kanazawa, MX-5 development boss, discloses, "It will be lightweight and the cost will be lightweight too. It will be easy to handle and fun to drive."1 In particular, the next-generation convertible will see a 2,200-pound body weight in comparison to the 2,410-pounds it currently carries. Using a 1.3-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine with Mazda SkyActiv technology, the 2014 MX-5 Miata it will also receive improved fuel-economy.

The automaker has further hinted at the possibility of integrating the new Kodo design language which would mix early trends with the latest styling cues. What's more, Mazda innovators are mulling over the idea of creating a variety of models in order to delight a vast range of MX-5 Miata aficionados. This would mean channeling everything from comfort to power, depending on consumer driving preferences.
